Niagara Falls New York USA Ontario Canada
Many people around the world think Niagara Falls is the name of a single Waterfall. But Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls in the Niagara River that straddle the international border between Canada and the United States of America.
From largest to smallest, the three waterfalls are
- The Horseshoe Falls
- The American Falls
- The Bridal Veil Falls (more…)
There are two different cities with the same name Niagara Falls, one in Ontario, Canada and another in New York, United States of America.
The Horseshoe Falls lie mostly on the Canadian side. The American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls lie entirely on the American side. These falls are located on the Niagara River, which drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario. The combined falls form the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world.
The Horseshoe Falls drop about 188 feet (57 meters), while the height of the American Falls varies between 70 feet and 100 feet (21meters and 30 meters) because of the presence of giant boulders at its base.
The Niagara Falls is very wide. The larger Horseshoe Falls are about 2,600 feet (790 meters) wide, while the American Falls are 1,060 feet (320 meters) wide.
There is a saying that in Canada you can see the Falls but in New York you can feel the Falls, referring to the “Cave of the Winds”.
